Fort Funston is arguably the best dog friendly beach in Mid-Peninsula.

You can walk along the long sandy beach or hike on the bluffs above. Dogs are allowed off-leash across most of the park. Fort Funston is very popular with local dog owners. You will find lots of friends for your pup to play with in the waves. Getting to the beach requires going down a long and steep section of either steps or a sand slope. Be ready for some exercise especially on the way up. However, with the amazing views and plenty of space for your dog to play, it will be well worth it.

Recommended ~1.5 mile loop hike

see map below

  • Park at the Fort Funston Parking Lot
  • Follow steep steps left of observation deck down to the beach
  • At 0.19 mile arrive at the beach and turn right
  • At 0.8 mile walk up the sand slope to the trail, turn right and follow it back to the car
  • At 1.5 mile arrive at the parking lot
