Dog friendly beaches in Los Angeles and Orange County

Southern California is known for its warm sun and sandy (if not very warm) beaches. Although there are plenty of beautiful places for you to stretch out your legs on the sand and bathe in the sun, the options are somewhat limited for your dog in Los Angeles and Orange County. However, there are some dog friendly beaches that offer tons of fun for you and your best friend. See the map below for all Los Angeles dog friendly beaches and Orange County dog friendly beaches, as well as directions to get there.

Huntington Dog Beach

Orange Country Dog Friendly Beaches - Huntington Dog Beach

Arguable, the best dog-friendly beach is the Huntington Dog Beach, just North of Huntington Beach. Dogs are allowed off-leash and can play in the surf along a very long stretch of the beach from Seapoint St. to Goldenwest St. There are many dogs running on the beach and swimming in the water and there is plenty of space for everyone. This really is a perfect dog beach. Parking is available on pullouts off the Pacific Coast Highway and costs $1.75 per hour. Water, restrooms and bags are available.

Rosie’s Dog Beach

Los Angeles Dog Friendly Beaches - Rosie's Dog Friendly Beach

The best of Los Angeles dog friendly beaches is the Rosie’s dog beach in Long Beach. Dogs are allowed off-leash between two lifeguard towers. The surf here is gentler but the dog-friendly portion of the beach is very short. You can’t really take a long walk and the area can get crowded. However, it is the only beach in Los Angeles to let your dogs run off-leash on the beach and swim in the ocean. Facilities are available and you can even rinse of your dog before getting in the car. Bring quarters if you want to avoid a ticket since that’s the only way to pay for parking.

Border Beach

Los Angeles and Orange County Newport Border Dog Friendly Beach

Another good option is the Border Beach in Newport Beach. It is a sliver of the beach next to Santa Ana River. Dogs can swim in the ocean and in the shallow river water. Parking can be difficult here so you might have to be patient.

Unfortunately that is it for official off-leash beaches in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Your on-leash options are:

Newport Beach

Dogs allowed on-leash on all Newport Beach city beaches before 10am and after 6pm.
Includes Corona Del Mar State Beach.
Dogs are not allowed at other times.

Laguna Beach

Dogs allowed on-leash on Laguna Beach city beaches.
Between June 15th and September 10th dogs allowed on-leash ONLY before 9am and after 6pm.

North Malibu

Dogs allowed on-leash on several beaches North of Malibu including:

  • Point Mugu State Park
  • County Line Beach
  • Leo Carrillo State Park

That’s all the dog friendly beaches in Los Angeles and Orange Counties that we know of. On many other beaches, such as Santa Monica and Venice beach, dogs are allowed on the leash on pathways but not on the beach itself.
